A wind gust of 83 miles per hour was recorded on Nantucket Monday morning during the winter nor’easter that continues to batter the island. The powerful gust was recorded around 9am, according to the National Weather Service, and was equivalent to winds of a Category 1 hurricane. Those gusts and wet, heavy snow combined to topple dozens of trees and utility poles across the island, knocking out power to thousands. Since last Sunday’s winter storm dumped roughly eight to 10 inches of snow on Nantucket, crews have been working around the clock to clear the island’s roads, sidewalks, and bike paths.
