If you watch the Gandalf vs. Balrog scene in The Lord of the Rings carefully, you'll notice that immediately after the Balrog attacks Gandalf with its flaming sword, Gandalf strikes back with Glamdring and actually shatters the Balrog's blade, causing it to disappear. However, due to the visual effects and the way the scene was filmed, this moment is not very clearly visible.
