McEnroe was killed in Jordan on 4 November 2016 by small arms fire while supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. He was then assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, deploying multiple times to the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility.
