This portrait of Rosa Parks, by sculptor Marshall D. Rumbaugh, is on display at the National Portrait Gallery in the new permanent exhibition "The Struggle for Justice" on the museum's second floor.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks’s courageous act of civil disobedience helped to launch the modern civil rights movement. Parks was riding a public bus home from her job as a seamstress when she refused the bus driver’s demand that she surrender her seat to a white male passenger.

Rosa Parks is described as a woman of quiet strength who has always taken a firm stand for what she believes in. In this painted-wood sculpture, Marshall D. Rumbaugh depicts Parks and the historical moment for which she is famous.

When Rosa passed away on October 24, 2005, at the age of 92, people around the world mourned her loss. Mar 27, 2022 · Rosa Parks being fingerprinted on February 22, 1956, by Lieutenant D.H. Lackey as one of the people indicted as leaders of the Montgomery bus boycott. She was one of 73 people rounded up by deputies that day after a grand jury charged 113 African Americans for organizing the boycott.
