maculatum: From the Latin maculatus ‘blotched’.

L. Confertum is closely related to L. purpureum var. hybridum (Villars) but this has floral leaves (bracts) all petiolate and with longer, narrower and sharper lobes. The general aspect is also much like L. amplexicaule and it has often been confused here and overseas with this species.
