Feb 21, 2025 · A semi-circular “dam” has been built in the lake near the footbridge to capture incoming silt and sediment. The dam will be cleaned out on a regular basis to alleviate the need for significant dredging of the entire lake in the future. The dam will be 12-18” below the water surface and will not be seen.

On Friday, September 27, Lake Susan and Flat Creek swelled to historic levels following heavy rainfall brought on by Hurricane Helene. This led to catastrophic flooding throughout the town of Montreat and Western North Carolina.

Oct 8, 2023 · The South Fork of the Swannanoa River, generally known as Flat Creek, flowed through the center of Montreat. During 1908 - 1909, a wooden dam was built by the Mountain Retreat Association. By 1924, the MRA administration decided to replace the wooden dam with a concrete structure.
