Moo Deng, a pygmy hippo living in Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Bang Phra, Thailand, went viral in September 2024. Viewers around the world fell in love with videos of her screaming at zoo keepers, relaxing in water buckets and enjoying baths on sunny days.

The 7-year-old female pygmy hippo arrived at John Ball Zoo in the summer of 2023 from the Toronto Zoo in Canada.

Penelope, one of the zoo’s pygmy hippos, is pregnant, the zoo announced in a Thursday social media post. It will be the pygmy hippo’s first calf. “This is an exciting milestone for both Penelope and the conservation of this incredible species,” the zoo wrote. “It’s the perfect time to visit Penelope and her perfectly round belly.”

The Metro Richmond Zoo in Virginia is offering 30-minute meet-and-greets with its new baby pygmy hippo Poppy through February.
