CPI General Secretary D Raja on Friday criticised the imposition of President's rule in Manipur. The imposition came shortly after the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and has sparked political debate across the nation.

"We are hopeful it (President's Rule) would pave the way for due political settlements and peaceful coexistence (of Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar tribals) as good neighbors," Khaikhohauh Gangte, secretary of the council, said.

The Indian federal government took over direct control of the restive northeastern state of Manipur on Thursday after the region's chief minister resigned amid ethnic violence that has killed at least 250 people over two years and displaced thousands.

The imposition of President's rule was prompted by the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who stepped down after nearly 21 months of ethnic violence in the state that has claimed over 250 lives.

Security was heightened in Imphal on Friday following the imposition of the President's Rule in Manipur, a move triggered by prolonged ethnic violence and political instability in the state.

Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra on Friday claimed that a leadership crisis within the BJP and its failure to reach a consensus on a chief ministerial candidate led to the imposition of President's rule in the state.

The Centre imposed President's rule in Manipur following CM N Biren Singh's resignation and unsuccessful attempts to form an alternative government. The assembly remains in suspended animation, with Governor Ajay Bhalla overseeing the state,
