The Festival del Burro, or Donkey Festival, is a seven-day extravaganza in the Caribbean coast town of San Antero during Easter. It's a mix of music, booze and burros adorned in outrageous costumes.

Donkeys are vital to commerce in Gaza, a consequence of Israel’s 15-year-old economic embargo. Now, they are increasingly hard to find, and harder to afford.

Video taken by Travis Ward shows a wild donkey approach him at a Lake Pleasant beach. Ward has seen dozens of donkeys at the lake but none quite like this.

He slowly moved toward the donkey and started plucking the thorns out one by one. There were about 40 in total. “He was being very still, very calm, and he just let me get all of them out,” Ward said.

Ward says the donkey thanked him in its own way. “He does the donkey noise for about a minute, and then, he takes off,” he said. It’s an encounter Ward will never forget.
