Snow began falling in Atlanta and across Middle and South Georgia on Tuesday afternoon and quickly started accumulating in some areas. The National Weather Service expanded its winter storm warning to encompass Atlanta and some counties north of the city.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has been treating interstate and major state roadways since Sunday in advance of the winter weather. On Monday, GDOT announced the closure of two express lanes, the I-75 Northwest Corridor Express Lanes and the I-75-South Metro Express Lanes.
Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency in Georgia on Monday in preparation for winter weather that could bring up to 2 inches of snow to Atlanta.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for much of the Atlanta metro area and points south (shown in purple below), where light accumulations of snowfall are possible. A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect for Upson County and central Georgia, where 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible Tuesday.
The lower half of Georgia could see several inches of snow starting in late morning or early afternoon Tuesday.
Authorities are searching for a Georgia man accused of stabbing an off-duty Atlanta police officer during a confrontation after a hit-and-run over the weekend.
A Georgia lottery player was a number shy of the $20 million Powerball jackpot but still netted a big prize. The player tried their luck in the Jan. 20 drawing and won $50,000 on a single ticket sold at a Publix supermarket in Atlanta, the Georgia Lottery said in an email.

ATLANTA — Winter weather is on the way Tuesday to metro Atlanta and north Georgia, with much of the region under a Winter Weather Advisory that begins at 10 a.m.
ATLANTA — Georgia is due to see winter weather conditions on Tuesday, with a Winter Storm Warning in place for the south and central parts of the Peach State and a Winter Weather Advisory for much of metro Atlanta taking effect at 10 a.m.
Another winter storm is making its way into Georgia on Tuesday. Gov. Brian Kemp issued a state of emergency and local school districts have canceled classes or moved to virtual learning.
