University of Houston System Chancellor Renu Khator was the highest-paid public university employee in Texas in 2023, earning more than $1 million a year in base pay plus several other contract perks that put her total compensation package around $1.

After approval by the board of regents last week, the university is expediting an initiative to install 400 new lighting assets and nearly 200 surveillance cameras across the Third Ward campus.

In addition to boosting revenue for UH, the new deal also includes more opportunities for companies to become sponsors.

Once completed, the initiative will add more than 400 new lights, 195 surveillance cameras, and 42 emergency call stations and security kiosks on campus.
