Cal Raleigh stands alone. And it's not just on the catcher home run leaderboard, where the Seattle Mariners' superstar affectionately known as Big Dumper has passed Salvador Perez for the most single-season home runs by a catcher ever, now at 49 and counting. It's also because of the way Raleigh did it.

Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners broke the major league record for most home runs in a season by a primary catcher, going deep in each of his first two at-bats Sunday against the visiting Athletics.

After years of dreadful drafting and developing, and a couple of ill-fated drafts under Jerry Dipoto’s early tenure, the Mariners started turning things around in 2018, a draft that produced the two major contributors to today’s statement win over the Athletics: Logan Gilbert and Cal Raleigh, each of whom enjoyed record-setting days in an 11-4 win.
