In preparation for the winter weather, school districts, colleges, and universities are closing their doors ahead of the storm.

With the threat of winter weather Tuesday into Wednesday this week, some schools are making the decision to close due to possible impacts.

Universities and colleges along the First Coast are starting to close in a domino effect in advance of the Winter storm that is hitting Florida Tuesday into Wednesday. By Tuesday afternoon, the area’s three most prominent universities and colleges had called it quits for some operations starting late Tuesday or Wednesday.

As a winter storm is expected to impact Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia beginning Tuesday night, some school districts are beginning to announce closures.

While winter weather is rare this far south, models are showing the likelihood of snow and other wintry precipitation has increased.

Snow fell in Florida's panhandle on Tuesday, blanketing roads, closing businesses and schools. Florida residents who had a rare snow day were seen in photos and videos making snowmen and having snowball fights. Meteorologists say the snow may stick around until Wednesday, but won't reach Tampa.
