The government shutdown has far-reaching effects for federal workers. Hundreds of thousands have been furloughed and many others are working without a paycheck. Some may be out of work permanently after the Trump administration announced plans for mass layoffs.
Donald Trump’s push to sack thousands of government workers has been dealt a blow, with a judge saying the president may have unlawfully overstepped his authority to take advantage of the federal shutdown.
The state relies on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to calculate statewide and local reports of joblessness. The data would normally have been released on Oct. 3, but with BLS employees on furlough, data for September was unavailable.
Prior to the Trump administration, Cincinnati had roughly 300 NIOSH employees working on research related to worker safety. The administration cut NIOSH's 1,100 employees nationwide by more than 90% in May, then reversed about 300 of those cuts. Only a small handful are still working in Cincinnati after the shutdown, union representatives say.
