California Democrats are hoping to turn the push for voters to approve new congressional maps into a referendum on Trump.

The California legislature on Thursday approved a redistricting package aimed at giving Democrats five more seats in the U.S. Congress, countering a partisan advantage President Donald Trump hoped to gain from a similar Republican plan to redraw political maps in Texas.

The bill was amended at the last minute to take out language that would allow for the changes to go forward only if Texas continued to advance its plan to redraw its map.
