A 12-year-old boy has died from a brain-eating amoeba after swimming in a South Carolina lake over the July Fourth weekend.

The family of 12-year-old Jaysen Carr is speaking out about the child's recent passing from a brain-eating amoeba in an effort to raise public awareness of the often fatal brain infection caused by Naegleria fowleri.

Jaysen Carr, 12, died a week after a trip to a North Carolina lake where a water-based amoeba entered his brain through his nose.
