(I am not sure how to edit or update my post)... We have been back to the beach - the rubbish problem is indeed due to the terrible floods this summer, which washed a lot of garbage into the sea, and the sea has dumped it back. We wanted to do something to help (rather than just moan!) and today we filled 16 bin liners with rubbish and a large plastic sack of glass bottles. We have a little more time here and will likely go back to do some more beach cleaning.
Which could be better beach - Alappuzha or Cherai? - As we are travelling with a 3year kid who loves to play in water, hence little concern about cleanliness and lesses crowd.

Alappuzha was pretty clean with a long stretch of beach so easy to find a quiet spot. we seem there with no problems.
