Good day Finding_nemo_nz or anyone who has trekked the Salkantay Trail independently this year. I am heading there to do an independent Salkantay and Santa Cruz trek in September. If you would not mind I would like to ask you some questions. 1) What did you use for footwear? I was thinking of trail runners that like I have used on the PCT and the Colorado Trail. 2) I was going to rent a stove instead of bring my JetBoil (canister stove) Where did you rent from?

We booked directly in Peru. Price was less than 1/2 cost as out of country; you can also book through Peru base service. All these services use the same guide services. We paid only $240 pp while others on our exact same trek had paid $700-1000 USD! Shop local!

Emmy, my wife and I from Melbourne are thinking about trecking the Matchu Pitchu in April 2017. May I ask why you did it in October and why not the classic Inca trail ? and did you spend much time to acclimatise in Cusco.. Can you also share any other advise ... our plan is to fly to Santiago then El Calafate (Patagonia), Buenos Aires, Julianca (Lake Tticaca), Lima then Cusco ... What do you think.. hoping that the stay in LIMA and couple of days in Cosco before the trek will help us acclimatise and minimise the altitude sickness.... Many Thanks , George Li

Gooday mate! We did it in October because we're doing a tour of SA and that just happened to be the time we went through Cusco. We did Salkantay over Inca because you have to book that months in advance and we didn't (also it's probably ~$500 not ~$200). If you're booking everything now I'd go for Inca though, not that Salkantay was bad - but the Inca trail is meant to be better (and Inca trail is lower altitude). Your plan sounds good - I assume you're flying. The only possible change may be Cusco before Lima as Lima is at sea level and lake Titicaca is at 3500m - similar to Cusco - so more continuous time to acclimatise. And it will be easier to fly home from Lima aaand it's on route from Lake Titicaca!

I did the Salkantay trail in May with Valencia travel guides. There were many self guided trekkers on the trail hiking to machu picchu. You will encounter many farms and small villages along the way that will let you camp on their property for a small fee and some even have hostels.Everyone we met along the way we're very nice and helpful and felt completely safe the whole time we were on our trip. Go for it. It will be a GREAT adventure.
